Terms of Service for SpellHive
Last updated: October 12, 2026
The short version
- SpellHive is a free spelling practice app. Adults set it up; children use it with an adult's supervision.
- We prepare the words, meanings, syllables, hints and recordings carefully and to the best of our knowledge, but they can contain mistakes. They are a practice aid, not an authority or an assessment.
- The app is provided "as is". We aren't responsible for errors in the learning content, lost guest progress or outages, to the extent the law allows.
- You can stop using SpellHive and delete your account at any time.
This summary is for convenience. The full terms below are what apply.
1. About these terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and
SpellHive ("SpellHive," "we," "us").
They cover the SpellHive apps for iOS and Android and the web app at
spellhive.com (together, "SpellHive" or "the App"). By creating an account,
continuing as a guest, or otherwise using SpellHive, you agree to these Terms
and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree,
please don't use SpellHive.
2. Who can use SpellHive
- Adults set it up. Parents, guardians and teachers create
and manage SpellHive accounts. You must be an adult (18 or older, or the
age of majority where you live) to create an account, sign in, or agree
to these Terms.
- Children use it with an adult. SpellHive is designed for
children practicing spelling under the supervision of the adult who set it
up. That adult is responsible for the child's use of the App, including on
any device where they enter the child's code.
- Teachers and schools. If you use SpellHive with students,
you confirm that you are allowed to do so by your school and that you will
follow your school's rules, including any requirement to inform parents or
obtain their consent before students' first names and practice results
are stored.
3. Your account
- Guest accounts. You can try SpellHive without signing in.
A guest account lives on one browser or device. It can be lost if you
clear the browser's or app's data, uninstall the App, or don't use it for
a long time. Sign in with Google (or Apple on iOS) to keep your progress.
We can't recover a lost guest account.
- Codes and PINs. A child's or student's code lets any
device that enters it practice as that child and see their progress. The
Parent PIN and Teacher PIN lock adult areas on one device. Keep codes and
PINs private. If a code is shared by mistake, make a new code from the
child's or student's card; devices using the old code are signed out.
- Accuracy. Give accurate information about yourself when
you sign in. You are responsible for activity under your account.
4. Learning content
SpellHive includes words, spellings, meanings, syllable splits,
sound-pattern hints, word lists, grade and difficulty levels, recorded
pronunciations, the device's own text-to-speech voice, and the feedback
shown after an answer (together, "Learning Content").
- Prepared in good faith. We prepare and review Learning
Content carefully and to the best of our knowledge, using reference
sources and software tools. Recorded pronunciations are made with
computer-generated voices.
- It can contain mistakes. Learning Content may contain
errors, omissions or simplifications. A meaning may be shortened or cover
only one sense of a word. Syllable splits and sound-pattern hints are
practice aids that may differ from a particular dictionary or curriculum.
A pronunciation may not match every accent. Spellings follow American
English.
- Not an authority or an assessment. Learning Content is
for spelling practice. It is not a dictionary, a curriculum, a test of
reading level, or a diagnosis of any learning need. Progress figures,
"% right," "tricky words" and similar labels describe practice in the App
only. Use your own judgment, and rely on your child's teacher or a
qualified professional for educational decisions.
- We may change it. We may add, correct, change or remove
Learning Content at any time.
- Tell us about mistakes. If you find an error, email
spellhive@gmail.com and we'll
look at it.
- No liability for Learning Content. To the fullest extent
permitted by law, we make no promise that Learning Content is accurate,
complete, current or suitable for any particular child, class or purpose,
and we are not liable for any loss or harm that comes from relying on
it.
5. Content you add
You may add your own content, such as word lists, children's or students'
first names, and class names ("Your Content").
- You keep ownership of Your Content. You give us permission to store,
copy and display it only as needed to run SpellHive for you and the
people you share it with (for example, your students' devices).
- You are responsible for Your Content. Make sure you have the right to
use it, that it is suitable for children, and that it contains no more
personal information than the App asks for. A first name is enough;
please don't add last names, photos or contact details.
- We don't review Your Content before it is used, and we are not
responsible for it. We may remove content that breaks these Terms.
6. Acceptable use
Please don't:
- use SpellHive for anything unlawful, harmful or unsuitable for children;
- add offensive, hateful or sexual words or content, or another person's
personal information beyond a first name;
- try to get into accounts, classes or data that aren't yours, or get
around the Parent PIN, Teacher PIN or Classroom Mode lock on a device
you don't manage;
- copy, scrape or bulk-download the word bank, recordings or other
Learning Content, or use them to build another product;
- interfere with, overload, reverse engineer or attack the App or its
servers, except as the law expressly allows; or
- pretend to be someone else, or misrepresent your relationship with a
child or school.
7. Our rights
SpellHive, including its design, software, word bank, Learning Content,
recordings, the SpellHive name and the bee logo, belongs to us or our
licensors. We give you a personal, revocable, non-transferable permission to
use the App for your family's or your class's spelling practice, under these
Terms. Teachers may use SpellHive with their own students. Some parts of the
App use third-party software and materials under their own licences.
8. Free service and changes
SpellHive is currently free. We may add, change or remove features, set
limits (for example, on guest accounts), or stop offering SpellHive. If we
ever introduce paid features, we'll describe the price clearly before you
pay, and you won't be charged without agreeing. If we plan to shut SpellHive
down, we'll try to give reasonable notice so you can stop using it and ask us
to delete your data.
9. App stores
If you got SpellHive from the Apple App Store or Google Play, that store's
terms also apply to your download. These Terms are between you and
SpellHive only, not Apple or Google, and Apple and Google are not
responsible for the App or its content.
10. Disclaimers
SpellHive and all Learning Content are provided "as is" and "as
available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied,
including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose,
merchantability and non-infringement. We don't promise that the App will
always be available, free of errors, or that progress will never be lost,
or that using it will produce any particular learning result.
11. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, SpellHive and the people
who make it are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special,
consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, progress,
goodwill or opportunity, arising from or related to SpellHive, its Learning
Content, Your Content, or these Terms, even if we were told such loss was
possible. Our total liability for any claim relating to SpellHive is limited
to the greater of the amount you paid us for SpellHive in the 12 months
before the claim (currently nothing) or US$50.
Some places don't allow certain warranties to be excluded or liability to
be limited. Where that's the case, these limits apply only as far as the law
allows, and nothing in these Terms takes away rights you have by law as a
consumer.
12. Ending use
- You can stop using SpellHive at any time, and delete your account and
data as described in the Privacy Policy
or on our account deletion page.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms or puts
children, other users or the App at risk. Where reasonable, we'll tell
you first.
- Sections 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 15 continue to apply after use ends.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms. We'll change the date at the top, and if a
change is significant we'll let account holders know in the App or on
spellhive.com before it takes effect. If you keep using SpellHive after the
change takes effect, the updated Terms apply. If you don't agree, stop using
SpellHive and delete your account.
14. Disputes
If you have a problem with SpellHive, please contact us first at
spellhive@gmail.com. We'll try to
resolve it informally and quickly. Nothing in these Terms takes away any
right you have under the law where you live to bring a claim. We'll add the
governing law and the place where disputes are heard to this section when
SpellHive is registered as a business, and we'll update the date above when
we do.
15. General
- These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you
and us about SpellHive.
- If part of these Terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If we don't enforce part of these Terms straight away, we can still
enforce it later.
- You can't transfer your rights under these Terms. We may transfer ours
if SpellHive is taken over by someone else, and these Terms will still
protect you.
